The head of the department is Duzhyi Ihor Dmytrovych, professor, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Higher School of Ukraine, doctor of medical sciences, professor, honored doctor of Ukraine. Medical experience more than 50 years, surgeon of the highest category.
Duzhyi Ihor Dmytrovych was born on February 4, 1940 in a family of employees in Bakhmach, Chernihiv region. He graduated from the 7th grade of high school №48. He graduated from medical school in 1957 in Sumy. He was the head of the first-aid post in the village of Tynytsia, Bakhmatsky District, Chernihiv Region, with a population of 9,000. There were 2 midwives with 25 years of experience. 120 babies were born in the maternity hospital every year. In three years, 1 child died at 5 months of age. In the first year of work on 01.01.1958 he performed manual allocation of a children’s place (manure).
After three years of work he entered the Kharkiv Medical Institute, which he graduated with honors in 1966. From the third year he was on duty as an assistant surgeon and even then began to operate on appendicitis, hernia. From 01.08.1966 he was enrolled as an intern in the surgical department of the Sumy Regional TB Dispensary.
In the early 70’s he became interested in postoperative bleeding and thrombotic complications and disseminated intravascular coagulation syndrome. One of the first in the Soviet Union proposed and implemented the prevention of these complications in operations on the lungs and pleura by using in the pre-intra- and postoperative periodsheparin in low doses. More than 20 articles have been published in scientific journals and dissertations have been written on their own. When I turned to the relevant institutions of Kyiv in search of a supervisor, no such thing was found – no one was aware of this problem. He applied to the Leningrad Military Medical Academy, received an invitation, but … Where is that Leningrad … That was the end of it. In his monograph “Clinical use of heparin” Academician AI Hrytsiuk quoted the works of ID Strong in 1975. According to the performance indicators, the surgical department where I. Duzhiy worked as an intern “tied” the list of identical departments of Ukraine.
Since 1978, I. Duzhiy headed the department, which in the same year entered the top three and never left this place. Since the early 80’s he developed the problem of diagnosis and differential diagnosis of pleural diseases. Implemented pleuroscopy in pleural effusion syndrome. Develops and improves methods of conservative and surgical treatment of common pulmonary tuberculosis. This is especially true of chemoresistant tuberculosis.
Igor Dmytrovych Duzhiy remains an advocate of combined methods of pulmonary tuberculosis treatment in modern conditions, namely intrapleural and extrapleural thoracoplasty.
Author of 7 monographs, including “Difficulties in diagnosing pleural diseases”, “Clinical pleurology” and “Acute chest pain (differential diagnosis)” have no analogues. Author of 10 textbooks, more than 30 inventions, confirmed by patents of Ukraine, author of more than 70 innovation proposals; author of more than 400 scientific papers, of which 67 have been published in publications indexed by the Scopus database. Co-author of a national textbook on tuberculosis, published in three languages.
11 dissertations for the degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences were defended in the areas of scientific preferences: three of them on the treatment of diseases of the pelvis; one – for the treatment of adenoiditis; one – for traumatic brain injury; five for surgical treatment of the lungs and pleura, and one for radiological diagnosis of tuberculous pleurisy. Currently, two dissertations for the degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences have been prepared for defense. N. and 4 postgraduate students and two doctoral students continue their work. His students, doctors and young scientists work independently not only in Ukraine, but also in Zambia, Tanzania and Palestine.
In 2019 he was awarded the diploma “For services to the Local Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the pious people” by Metropolitan Epiphanius of Kyiv and All Ukraine. On behalf of the Government and the Diaspora of Ukraine he was awarded the Order of the Patriot of Ukraine (2011). In 2016 he was awarded the medal “For Sacrifice and Love for Ukraine”.
In 2019 he was awarded the Order “SCIENTIST OF THE YEAR 2019” for winning the International Program “Scientist of the Year – 2019”, held under the auspices of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Federation of Scientists with the support and participation of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Science and Education. .
Duzhiy ID is a permanent member of the editorial boards of scientific and practical journals “Tuberculosis, lung diseases, HIV infection”, “Medical Affairs”, the editorial board of the medical scientific and practical journal “Kharkiv Surgical School”.
From 1998 to present – Chairman of the Sumy Regional Branch of the Association of Surgeons of Ukraine.
